It may also be that, in addition to the fact that steroids may impair mental skills—perhaps making them less efficient in managing stress, managing money, caring for themselves, or coping well in stressful situations—some people who abuse steroids are less likely than others to seek treatment.
There is, unfortunately, evidence that this could be true. Studies show that when people are treated for depression in a clinic, their use of alcohol, cocaine, and amphetamines increases. In another study, researchers also found that people with more severe depression than the average had worse mental health.
The authors note that these relationships make it “difficult to determine whether [the drug abuser] would benefit from psychiatric treatment or is simply at greater risk” (DeCherney 2006). It is likely that some people are more likely to be depressed, but depression and steroid use can be both mutually reinforcing; people who abuse steroids and don’t want to take antidepressant medication could be in need of help, but it may not be easy or cheap to find.
The bottom line
This is not the only area of drug research that concerns us. There is little scientific understanding regarding the relationship between steroid abuse and the onset of mental illnesses. The best thing we can do is help our clients understand and minimize the risks associated with their abuse.
